Our Story,

Our journey started when my daughter was just three years old. I discovered rugby as a way to stay active and connect with her, but as time went on, I realized there was something missing. After my son was born, I couldn’t find anything that celebrated mothers who play rugby while balancing the joys and challenges of raising young children. There was no space that truly acknowledged the unique journey of mums involved in sports, and that's when the idea for Why is Mummy So Muddy? was born.

The inspiration came from my own experiences as a mother and athlete, paired with my love for writing. Over the years, I'd often written silly poems for my kids—just like my dad did for me and my sisters when we were growing up. It was these little rhymes and stories that sparked something deeper in me.

I’ve also dabbled in illustration, so creating a fun, playful picture book felt like the perfect project. Why is Mummy So Muddy? became a way for me to combine my love for sport, creativity, and of course, my children. This project is more than just a book—it's a celebration of the many mums out there who are muddy, messy, and making sports a part of their family story. It’s about showing our kids that being active is fun, powerful, and something to be proud of.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. We hope Why is Mummy So Muddy? inspires you to embrace the joy of sport, motherhood, and the little moments that make life so special.

About the author,

Hi, I'm Sally, a passionate advocate for women's rugby, and my love for the spirited energy of the game fuels my storytelling.

As a mum of a toddler and a 9-year-old, I know the importance of resilience, teamwork, and embracing the thrill of new challenges—lessons I aim to pass on to young readers through my tales.

I live in Scotland, where I balance my love for sport with my career as a research scientist by day. Through my writing, I strive to inspire a new generation to embrace the camaraderie of rugby and to see how powerful, fun, and empowering it can be to be part of a team.
